Frequently asked questions about polarized sunglasses

How do I know if mine are polarized?

Very easily done. Just look through the glasses at the reflection of any object on a window panel (but not at yourself! you have to look at an angle to the glass). Then, turn the sunglasses around as if they were the hands of a clock facing you. If the intensity of the reflection doesn't change with respect to what you see through the window, they are not polarized. Or you can use as your target image any of the numerous other examples of linear polarization mentioned in this web site: com'on, read on!

I still don't understand, why are polarized sunglasses better than normal dark sunglasses?

Normal sunglasses decrease the intensity of everything by the same amount. Polarized sunglasses can selectively eliminate the reflection from light coming from above the water surface.

Then, could polarized glasses be crystal clear?

Nope, they will always decrease the intensity of unpolarized light by at least half. In practice somewhat more because of losses in the material. They come in all shades from light gray (only polarizing) to very dark (polarizing plus black tint), and also light sensitive (photochromatic). You can even find sunglasses with darkness adjustable by the user.

Does it matter the time of the day?

Yes. Maximum polarization is obtained when the sun is at about 37 degrees from the horizon (in theory 100% polarization at the Brewster angle). If the sun is very low or very high the sunglasses will be of little help in filtering the glare in calm seas. A rule of thumb would be that polarized filters limit the glare from calm waters for a sun altitude between 30 and 60 degrees (but see next question). Anyway, it should be stressed that polarization won't help in looking directly at the sun (except in decreasing the overall intensity of everything by half).

Can polarized sunglasses help when driving a car?

Yes. Those pesky bright reflections of the sun on the cars ahead can sometimes be attenuated a good deal. They tend to be horizontally polarized, thus perfect for vertically polarized sunglasses. The reason is that the surfaces that you see on the car in front of you (the back window, the trunk door, and even the roof) will be slanted towards you, while the sun will be more or less aligned in the vertical plane through both cars (if not you wouldn't see its reflection from those surfaces). However, if the sun is relatively low behind you, the sun rays will be near perpendicular to the reflecting (vertical) surfaces which won't polarize the light. The sunglasses will help more with the reflections from the glass than from the metal as the former are polarized to a higher degree. What about the brightness of the road itself? That light is also partially polarized, but by scattering (as opposed to reflection). The direction of polarization will change with the direction of the road with respect to the position of the sun. The rule is that the polarization is tangential to a circle centered on the sun. That means that if the sun is in front, behind, or high above, the road brightness will tend to be horizontally polarized and the filter of the sunglasses will provide some help. However, if the sun is to one side, the polarization will rotate vertically, the more so the lower the sun happens to be. Of course, if the road is wet you get the same anti-glare power than at sea.

Can polarized sunglasses help in skiing and other non-water sports?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The snow glare is not polarized, so they won't provide extra help in that regard (although often advertised for that purpose). But, with the sun high, the air-light (haze + sky) near the horizon is polarized by scattering and the polarized sunglasses can make features far away really stand out (this is used in fire detection). On the other hand, with the sun low the sunglasses could be detrimental looking south or north, as the air-light would be vertically polarized. Other situations can be thought were they would be useful, but remember that one reason they are so good in water sports is that the reflector always remains horizontal!

We don't like cricket... but we don't love it that much, either!

With the recent Ashes series over, the sport of cricket is buzzing with popularity, so it’s no real surprise to see the Wii get its first ‘proper’ cricket game. Codemasters have taken it upon themselves to create Ashes Cricket, but have they done enough to faithfully recreate the sport on the Wii? We put on our mitts and pads and found out for ourselves...

Probably the first thing to set down here is that, no, Ashes Cricket does not take advantage of the Wii Motion Plus – those expecting a truly accurate experience may well walk away disappointed at the lack of true realism. You’ll still be swinging the Wiimote all over the place, just without any true degree of realism. Playing as one of several international teams, you’ll bowl, bat and bowl some more around some of the world’s most famous clubhouses.

Learning to play the game is the first on the cards with Ashes Cricket. This is achieved by going through a dull, slow-paced and uninformative tutorial that really doesn't help beyond getting the basics right. Players are presented with text-based explanations and still pictures of what to do, with no background music or audio commentary, and are then expected to pull off the required action, which is sometimes unclear. For instance, when it came to spin bowling, we very nearly had a series of dislocated shoulders trying to suss out the arm movements we were meant to be doing. It’s not just the descriptions that are lacking, either: there's no distinct advice on where to bowl, how to bat and what are the strengths and weaknesses of different types of bowler – in short, you’re not really told how to play beyond throwing and hitting.

You can essentially divide the controls into two distinct areas: bowling and batting. When batting, you aim your shot by pointing on screen and holding D to select what direction to hit in, trying your best to ensure your swing will cover the area where the ball is delivered to. Of course, this means the direction you swing the Wiimote has no effect on the shot’s trajectory; likewise, the power of your swing is dictated by pressing either A for a conservative shot, B for an aggressive loft shot or swing without pressing buttons for a regular shot – the player’s physical swing is not the main factor here. After the shot has been hit, you can press B to make a dash for the run, and A will either call the runners back or make them dive for the run (usually yelling "nooooo!" in the style of an action movie through the Wiimote speakers). It’s worthwhile mentioning here that the fielders never miss when throwing for the wicket, so runs are a riskier business than in real life.

Being on the fielding team is probably the most basic of all functions in the game, as the process is totally automated: the only involvement the player has is in rearranging players on the green, so all you need to is bowl. First off, you choose what type of bowler you want (Fast, Spin and Medium being your principle choices here), and you then can choose to 'shine' the ball by jerking the Wiimote up and down (this makes the ball harder to deliver, but gives it more spin), then select where to bowl by pointing on screen and pressing A – which sometimes exhibits alarming inaccuracy. After fixing the aim, you then have to bowl the ball like a true cricketer... until you realise a flick of the wrist is a lot easier, that is. Hold A to throw a slow delivery, B for a fast one, or press nothing delivers at normal pace. Time three bowls right, and you have the option for a 'Perfect' ball – which is a slightly trickier one for the batsman to deal with.

In terms of the main content, you have the choice of an Exhibition Match, 'Scenarios' or the chance to sink your teeth into a full Ashes Test Series, ironically probably the worst part of the game. Scenarios are good to play as they involve what is usually a relatively short (but taxing) challenge to pull off, and Exhibition Matches are fun due to their downscalable nature (i.e. you’re not in for 90 overs), but the full-on Ashes mode is one only the true enthusiasts will enjoy: a 90-over test (that's 540 balls per innings) and being faced with the task of doing all the bowling and batting, is not a nice prospect – over an hour of bowling at times! And five tests to a series!? No thanks! It is much better to create an Exhibition Match with a lower over count, unless you really are into the monotony of bowing for over an hour…

Whether you're going for the full tests, a scenario match or an exhibition, you will find a lot of things to be frustrated with. First and foremost, is that when you swing while batting you must make sure that you do so before the ball actually comes near your batsman – a very unrealistic process. Conversely, once you do learn how to swing, it can become almost too easy to smack the ball for 6. Then there’s the AI batsmen; those robots who have the uncanny knack of those who rarely make errors. Even changing the difficulty mode does little to affect their abilities as, from what we can gather, all the difficulty affects is how good the fielders are. So increasing the difficulty actually doesn't make the game 'harder', it just means both teams score fewer runs through catches – the opposition batsmen still hit your balls precisely with great regularity. Sometimes it becomes so frustrating when bowling that you end up like feeling you're a spectator in the game whose actions determine nothing, rather than an active participant.

The game's not helped much by the visuals, either: from simple things like the ball disappearing in replays, character likenesses only vaguely resembling the player in question, to larger issues like players being able to teleport the ball into their hands for catches, there is a lot lacking. Also, some teams have a very limited selection of players to choose from, making the selection process practically pointless in most teams bar England and Australia (who wants to play as the losing team though!?) Still, there are a few famous voices – Ian Botham and Shane Warne amongst them – who offer their cricketing wisdom from time to time, which puts a bit of polish on. We can't really fault the commentary, either – although, as expected, it does have the tendency to loop a lot.

However, for all the dullness of the single player experience, there is a multiplayer option that can make provisions for a jolly good time. While there are still the same flaws of out-of-synch swing times, ridiculously good or atrocious fielding (depending on the difficulty setting) and a fumbley shot direction control, there is something of a level playing field here, making it quite fun to play, although mainly due to human errors. Playing against another person keeps the matches even – the CPU plays a very tight game, with few errors compared to a human player, and also reduces the long and arduous nature of the innings. 90 overs with a human batsman and bowler? Impossible! Still, it seems that there's not really a balance here with how cricket actually works – scoring 74 runs with 10 of them being 6es really doesn't fit in well with how cricket should be played!

Email the seller to ask how long they have been using the bat. A couple of seasons? Is it your nets bat? Once you can establish from the buyer or the photos the age of the bat you can then decide if it ‘bat life’ is worthy of buying it. Look for guys who buy a bat, tonk around with it for a few times then realise it is not suitable for them. They can’t take back to the shop because they have red kiss marks on it – so they sell it, online.

Watch out for fake Kookaburra bats. A genuine 1st Grade English Willow bat is worth more than $30. For buyers external to India – there seems to be a fake Indian cricket bat ebay scheme going on. Beware of dodgy wood with fake Gray-Nicholls or Kookaburra stickers on them. ‘Genuine Willow’ is pricey. You get what you pay for. Also – to get wooden products out of India it may have to be fumigated by customs. Plus look into import taxes, high postage rates and compulsory insurance.

Kashmir or English willow? Kashmir is cheaper but heavier and has a shorter cricket Bat Life. The more expensive and professional cricket bat is one made of willow. Keep in mind, the quality of the wood is graded with 1 being the best.

Weight

Your cricket bat weight is dependant on your style and body type. A super strong player who slogs sixes like Andrew Symonds would have a heavier, thick edged, wide middle bat. If you work the ball into gaps for 1’s and 2’s tend to use lighter cricket bats. It is up to you and what you feel comfortable with. Try having a hit at the nets with your friends bat to see what suits you.

For Children in schooling years of 7 – 10 it is recommended that the bat is 2lb 4ozto 2lb 7oz (Medium) in weight. Why’s this? If the kids bad is too heavy they may get lugged down with a punishing bat. Some batsmen can generate the same amount of force with the power of their wrists and their swing speed. Carrying around a tree trunk is not helpful for their cricketing careers. Try a friends bat – see how the kid hits.

Some sellers out there seem to be naive to the fact that when a buyer see an item he thinks he is buying the item! Ask them if the photo they provided is what you will get. Again, this should be okay as they have a number of satisfied customers and a long list of cricket equipment on sale.

Ask if it is In Stock!

Drop the seller a questions on the expected time of delivery. They may be a drop-shipper who sells what they do not have in stock to save on storage room. Ask them when you get it. Simple.

If you get the opportunity to travel the world you will find different countries call the rubber soles plastic strap footwear by different names! I have heard of Pluggers, Sandals, Thongs, Slippers and Jandals. Can you think of any more nick names?

But Beware

Flip flops can be easily damaged. To take care of them simply to heed of the following maintenance steps.

  • Wipe the mud off with a sponge. Use a thin towel to get a little rough with them.

  • Get a toothbrush and get it wet. Lightly scrub. Then scrub a bar of soap and take to your IPL flip flop. Get in the grooves.... OR
  • Throw them in the washing machine on cold. Make sure they are by themselves as other clothes will rip the straps off. Add a little soap and do not allow to spin. Warning: Dryers will melt them and set them on fire!
  • Use vinegar to kill bacteria (use gloves) and to kill invisible molds use tea tree oil in a spray bottle.
  • Take 2 whitening denture tablets and put in your flip flops in a bucket of hot water and soak for 30 minutes. Scrub lightly with a soft, bristled brush and rinse.
  • Spray with water hose OR use a towel and hot water to wipe them down.
  • If you have a dishwasher put them in with lemon juice for an automated bedazzling pair. (don't tell Mum!)
  • Use shoe shine to cover the scratches up when dry.
